Supradetachment basins in necking domains of rifted margins: Insights from the Norwegian Sea

Supradetachment basins at passive rifted margins are a key witness of major-continental extension, and they may preserve record from which the amount rates extension metamorphic core complex exhumation be reconstructed. These have mainly been recognised in back-arc orogenic collapse settings, with few examples margins. Using 2D 3D seismic reflection, wellbore, gravity anomaly data, we here characterise three-dimensional structural tectonosedimentary evolution spoon-shaped supradetachment basin that was formed necking domain margin, southern limit Møre Vøring segments Norwegian margin. The basin, an areal extent ca. 2400 km2, landward-rotated syn-tectonic succession up to 30 km thick (true stratigraphic thickness), is separated footwall continental margin basement culminations by major large-offset (>30 km) normal fault complexes characterised cross-sectional geometry whereby upper, steeper part gives way low-angle detachment depth. associated tectonic thinning crust 11 km, compared crustal thickness 27 proximal domain. filled pre-, syn- post-tectonic deposits, accumulated over time as evolved series rift- faulting events. reflects deposition during two separate rifting events, disconnected deposits reflecting relative short period quiescence. results discussed light on other globally, well context overall.
